Everyone knows how stressful grades can be, whether you have an important test coming up, or if you need to get your grade for a class up quickly, or even more. But not everyone really understands the full effect with a student’s mental health when it comes to grades.
According to Challenge Success, “about 30% of middle school students believe that their parents/caregivers have higher expectations for their future than they do for themselves.” This is how many students feel daily, but what about the parents point of view?
Parents may feel differently when it comes to their child’s grades. My mom, Vada Valeska explained, “I think it depends on the importance that is put on the grades by the parents.” She has six kids, including me, and she says that so far only two have actually cared about their grades.
In my opinion, grades are important, but they shouldn’t be the most important thing in a student’s life. I have struggled with stress from grades and assignments a few times, but I don’t really deal with it a lot, because my grades are really good most of the time.
I interviewed 8th grader Madison Panarra to get her opinion on grades in school. When I asked her if she had any advice for upcoming middle schoolers and their grades, she replied, “Definitely keep up with your school work.” She also suggested that having less homework in school would reduce stress levels and mental health problems when it comes to their grades.
If students were given less homework, they would have more time for themselves, which might help with their mental health. It is really important for a student to have homework, even though most students would disagree, but it’s not good for them if they are constantly being drowned with homework.
Some tips with homework in school are to try to get all of your work done in class, even if sometimes you either get distracted or just don’t want to do it. But if you do end up with homework, try to get it done right away when you get home, that way you will have time for yourself after a long day of school.
In conclusion, you should definitely care about your grades, but make sure you aren’t putting too much pressure on yourself, and that your grades don’t define you.
