Recently, a new musical was released on November 22, 2024. Wicked is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. It tells the story of Elphaba, a young woman who is misunderstood because of her green skin, and her unlikely but heartfelt friendship with Glinda. After an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, their relationship reaches a crossroads as their lives begin to take very different paths.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are part of the cast, playing key roles—Grande as Glinda and Erivo as Elphaba. This likely contributed to the movie’s popularity, as both are well-known actors and singers.
Wicked Part 2 will be released on November 21, 2025. The two films were shot back-to-back, meaning fans won’t have to wait for the second movie to be filmed.
I was honestly really excited to watch Wicked because of all the great ratings I had seen, but at the same time, I thought it might be kind of silly. So many people were hyping it up, but I just felt it was a bit overrated. There were even people at the theater dressed up, wearing headbands with witch hats and t-shirts that said Wicked.
I went to see Wicked with my best friend, my mom, and her mom at Blue Oaks Cinema. Our moms bought us slushies and a big popcorn that we could refill whenever we wanted during the movie. We also stopped at the dollar store and bought some candy, which we snuck into the theater and turned into a “candy salad.”
The movie was almost 3 hours long, so we were in the theater for a while. The theater itself was nice, though a lady next to us spilled her popcorn everywhere and made loud noises whenever we got up from our seats.
My favorite part of Wicked was the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba. I love how they started as rivals and then became best friends. The only thing I didn’t like was how they separated at the end of the movie.
Overall, I thought the movie wasn’t bad. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if it hadn’t been a musical. Despite the characters breaking into song every five seconds, Wicked was pretty entertaining. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys musicals or long films.
