Western Placer Schools have implemented the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program in all of their buildings to encourage positive behavior and enhance learning. Part of PBIS involves recognizing when students follow the school rules, which we do through Panther Bucks and Five Star Points. We also want to acknowledge positive staff behavior. One way to do this is through positive postcards that students can write to their teachers, highlighting things they appreciate.
The postcards can be found in the library on Mrs. Brown’s desk. They have their own stand, which includes the directions and layout for how the postcard should be filled out. Once completed, the postcard is placed in a box to be delivered to the staff mailbox.
Positive postcards are something everyone on campus should participate in. They are a great way to show appreciation to staff members. Mrs. Brown, our librarian, highlights the impact they have on teachers: “Teachers are very appreciative of the postcards. Teaching is a hard job, so it’s good to let them know how much their work means to us.”
These postcards were created by Mrs. Ward’s advanced art class a few years ago and are still being designed by the class today. Many of the postcards feature paintings and drawings created by the students.
Before going into the staff mailboxes, the postcards need to be filtered. Mrs. Brown explains the process of filtering the messages: “I read through the postcards before I deliver them to the staff mailboxes to make sure they are positive.” Each card is checked to ensure it will uplift teachers, not bring them down.
The PBIS postcards are a way to boost staff morale and encourage a positive attitude and environment for both students and staff.
