Many schools are now requiring students to use clear backpacks to improve safety, hoping to prevent dangerous items from being brought into school. This idea may seem good at first, but many students believe it’s an invasion of privacy and are against it.
There are several reasons why clear backpacks aren’t beneficial in schools. First, although the goal of clear backpacks is to keep students safe, they invade privacy and don’t truly solve the issue of violence. Dangerous items can still be hidden in pockets, inside binders, or in other personal items.
Second, clear backpacks have not significantly improved overall safety. For example, Gwinnett County Public Schools ran a pilot program and later decided not to require clear backpacks for the 2025–26 school year because the policy did not improve school safety.
Another concern is that clear backpacks can lead to bullying. Students may be judged based on the contents of their bags, which could lead to teasing or bullying — especially if someone carries items that others see as unusual or different. This could make students feel even more unsafe at school.
Clear backpacks also make it easier for thieves to spot valuable items like electronics, money, or other expensive belongings. When everything is visible, it’s easier for items to be stolen. Additionally, students’ belongings are more likely to be damaged or tampered with when they are exposed.
Some might argue that clear backpacks reduce the need for bag checks or random searches. However, when everyone’s bags are see-through, even harmless or personal items might raise suspicion. This could actually lead to more frequent checks, not fewer.
There are better ways to improve student safety without using clear backpacks. For example, schools could require the use of secure lockers so students can leave their backpacks and only carry necessary items. Another option is smart surveillance systems — monitored cameras in hallways that are actively reviewed during school hours. Finally, schools can use metal detectors to help prevent harmful items from being brought inside.
To sum it up, while clear backpacks are intended to improve school safety, they can cause several problems for students. They invade privacy, increase the risk of theft, and may make students feel uncomfortable or exposed. Instead of relying on clear backpacks, schools should focus on better solutions that protect students while respecting their privacy.
