Dungeons & Dragons is a popular game known worldwide, where players can create or choose a character to embark on adventures. The game also requires a Dungeon Master (DM), the person who guides the story and controls the game’s world, as well as dice to determine the outcomes of various actions. I recently interviewed Natalie Cervantes Gonzalez, the president of the Dungeons & Dragons Club, to learn more about her role and the club’s activities.
Cervantes shared that being president of the club is an enjoyable experience. She received training on how to manage the club from a friend, which has helped her feel confident in her leadership role. However, one challenge she faced was scheduling meetings for the club. While Cervantes initially wanted the club to meet on Fridays, Ms. Sunding, the club’s supervisor, suggested Wednesdays instead, citing that many members might not want to attend on a Friday.
When it comes to playing Dungeons & Dragons, Cervantes doesn’t mind taking on either role—the Dungeon Master or a player. She explains that playing as a character in the world created by the DM is exciting, but it’s equally fun to control the game and guide the story as a Dungeon Master. In D&D, each player must create a character, and part of the fun is role-playing based on that character’s traits. For example, if a character is stern, the player might adopt a more serious or strict demeanor during gameplay. This kind of role-playing adds depth to the experience and helps bring the game to life.
Of course, Dungeons & Dragons is also about teamwork and collaboration. Cervantes notes that the players in her group work exceptionally well together. They come up with creative strategies and get along well, which is essential for a successful game.
The Dungeons & Dragons Club will meet on Wednesdays after school in room 103.
