You may have heard about ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement department. ICE has been deporting the parents of children from different ethnicities back to their “original” countries, and many people are very upset about this issue.
ICE has been separating families through these mass deportations, and now they are even entering schools. Thankfully, it seems that our school is safe from ICE for now.
Recently, there was a protest in Fullerton, Los Angeles, against the mass deportations, although protests also took place in other locations. Fullerton was the main site for the protest.
Across the United States, various protests have occurred in response to ICE’s mass deportations.
The main focus of this article is about ICE entering schools and deporting parents by directly communicating with the students. They ask the kids questions about their parents—such as where they live, if they’ve always lived there, and other questions that might seem innocent to the students. However, the students don’t expect the horrific experience of coming home to find their parents have been deported.
The truth is that this practice is horrifying, and although it has been happening since 2003, it has become more prominent under the Trump administration.
While opinions about this issue vary, I think we can all agree that it is wrong for ICE to enter schools and ask students about their parents’ ethnicity.
In conclusion, ICE’s actions in schools, asking students about their parents’ ethnicity, are inappropriate and harmful. Luckily, our school seems to be safe from this, but we must stay aware of the issue.
