Every year, new 6th graders arrive at our school. But do we really know how they feel about starting at a new school and a new grade? Interviews with several 6th graders and their teachers reveal their thoughts and experiences.
Several students from Mr. Agrippino’s class shared their feelings about 6th grade. Hunter Goin stated, “It is going well.” Brooklyn Murphy added that her experience has been “good.”
When asked what they were looking forward to this year, Azucena Hernandez expressed excitement for “good grades.” Hunter Goin mentioned, “I am looking forward to flag football next year.”
Regarding their adjustment to middle school, students responded that “they were good.” When asked about sports participation, Hunter Goin indicated he plans to “try out for flag football next year” and also “try out for basketball.”
Mr. Agrippino was also interviewed and shared insights about teaching. He stated, “I love teaching 6th grade, and I have been a teacher for 29 years.” He noted that he enjoys witnessing students transition, even though they sometimes act like they are still in 5th grade.
Reflecting on his own 6th-grade experience, Mr. Agrippino mentioned that he attended 7th and 8th grades for middle school. He recalled, “In 6th grade, I thought I would transition into middle school easily because I thought I was cool, but I wasn’t.” He also coaches 7th-grade volleyball and hockey.
Mrs. Mahan, who has been teaching for two years, expressed her love for the profession. Students in her class shared that they “love 6th grade.” When asked about sports, they replied “no” regarding participation.
One student indicated excitement for the year ahead, saying, “I am looking forward to getting good grades and all A’s.” When asked about expectations for 7th grade, the student mentioned, “Everybody says that it is exactly like 6th grade except for the PE classes. So yes, I think it will be good.”
This is a glimpse into how 6th graders feel about their new grade. Insights from both students and teachers help understand their experiences in transitioning to a new school.
