Have you ever come home after hours of school and practice just to be bombarded with piles of homework? This is an occurring issue for several students around the world. There are many struggles with homework that teachers and parents might not be able to see.
Homework can increase stress and anxiety in students, and the pressure of completing assignments on time can lead to significant stress, especially when students juggle multiple subjects and extracurricular activities. Excessive homework can cut into time for relaxation, hobbies, and social interactions, which are essential for mental well-being. It may also lead to less time spent with peers, sparking feelings of loneliness and isolation.
After-school assignments can find their way into a student’s everyday life, distracting them from what’s going on in the world. Teachers might not know what a student does or deals with after school and assigning work to do at home could be adding yet another thing onto a child’s plate, and there needs to be a realization that it isn’t always going to get done. Not always because that student is irresponsible or not managing their time well, but because they have other things they absolutely have to do.
Students endure going to school every day for 6-7 hours at a time not including after-school activities and sports. Homework is unnecessary because school is supposed to be preparing students for real life, and most jobs don’t require you to go home and work even more. Once your work day is over you can go home and spend time with family, and friends and pick up your job again the next day. But with homework, it is a never-ending cycle of school 24/7.
This leads to students feeling stressed or even rushed doing sports or trying to enjoy their evening with the thought in the back of their head that they have all of this homework they must get done. It is important to have a break from learning and work so the mind of a student can rest or be creative with something else. Also, when the work is digital, it can cause headaches or nausea staring at a screen for a long period of time and that is unfair to the student simply trying to get good grades.
It cuts into a lot of the time students need to spend being a kid and enjoying life before they can’t anymore. In conclusion, homework needs to be taken more into consideration on how much it is actually helping a student learn more, rather than just having a negative impact on students all around the world.
