Q: What inspired you to become a teacher in broadcasting, journalism, and yearbook?
A: When I taught at Lincoln High it was primarily tech and business type classes. When I came to GEMS, I started the Broadcasting program and from there I wanted to continue to grow media offerings. Yearbook came the following year and last year I brought back Journalism
since I taught it at the high school for 11 years.
Q: Which journalist, broadcaster, or media company has had the biggest impact on you?
A: I would say Steve Hartman and sports reporters. Steve Hartman produces amazing, real-life stories that always have a cool lesson to them.
Q: What’s your favorite part about teaching broadcasting, journalism, and yearbook?
A: I think the fact that most kids want to be in there, and the fact that the class changes each year. I have to stay up on technology
and all the changes involved but I love that. I would get bored if things did not change.
Q: How do you encourage students to be creative and think critically about their work?
A: I think by allowing them to have input into what we create. Each one of my classes produces a product….a show, a book and a website so it is super important that the students have buy in.
Q: What’s one phrase you often say to your students in broadcasting or yearbook class?
A: PLUG IN THE CAMERAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Q: Outside of teaching, what hobbies or interests do you enjoy that might surprise your students?
A: I love sports, live music, traveling, movies, spending time with family and friends. I love all the outside teaching things I am involved in like coaching, Athletic Director and the 8th grade East Coast Trip too.
