At Glen Edwards Middle School, sports are currently limited to a few options, including basketball, volleyball, track, cross country, flag football, and roller hockey. By adding more sports such as baseball and softball, GEMS could help more students stay active, have fun, and be part of a supportive community where they can showcase their skills.
First, adding more sports would give students greater opportunities to participate and grow. Not every student is interested in the same activities, so expanding the selection would allow more students to find something they enjoy. Participating in sports can build confidence, encourage teamwork, and give students a sense of accomplishment. It can also help prepare students for sports they may want to continue in high school.
Second, many students are already interested in sports that are not currently offered at GEMS. Some may play baseball or softball outside of school but do not have the chance to represent their school in those sports. Adding these options would allow students to stay involved in activities they already enjoy and strengthen their connection to the school community.
Finally, offering more sports would support students’ physical and mental health. Playing sports improves fitness, strength, and coordination, while also helping to reduce stress. Being part of a team also teaches valuable life skills such as communication, responsibility, and supporting others.
Overall, adding more sports at GEMS would provide students with more opportunities to stay active, develop new skills, and be part of a team. Expanding the program would make school more engaging and enjoyable for a wider range of students.
