The Glen Edwards Middle School wrestling team’s season was a journey marked by hard work, challenges, and exciting moments. After school practices required dedication, as wrestlers pushed themselves in strength training, skill development, and match preparation. Throughout the season, they tested their limits, competed against tough opponents, and supported one another. The team’s ups and downs reflected the values of teamwork, commitment, and perseverance.
This year, the Panthers were coached by Coach Alex de Leon, who joined GEMS from Olympus. After 22 years of coaching high school wrestlers in grades 9 through 12, coaching middle school students in grades 6 through 8 was a new experience for him. When asked about the season, Coach Alex said, “Overall, I feel the season was a great success. Being my first year coaching middle school wrestlers compared to coaching high school the last 22 years was quite an adjustment, but for the better.”
The team also worked toward both individual and team goals. Coach Alex shared, “The wrestling team exceeded my expectations and goals because I only really had seven weeks to prepare them for league duals. Winning three and losing two seemed to be a great success. Overall, every wrestler got better in skills and technique.” In a short amount of time, the team made noticeable improvements and showed strong growth.
I also spoke with GEMS student Jose Leon, who wrestled this season. When asked about his favorite part of wrestling, Jose said, “My favorite part about wrestling is the duals.” He also shared a move he has been working to improve: “One move I’ve been practicing is a fireman’s carry.”
Overall, the GEMS wrestling team had a successful and rewarding season. From after school practices to competitive matches, the hard work of both the wrestlers and their coach paid off. The season ended on a positive note, highlighting the dedication and determination of everyone involved.
