Glen Edwards Middle School students only have about 30 to 36 minutes for lunch. During that time, they must walk from class, get their food, find a place to sit, eat, use the restroom, and spend time with friends. By the time many students finally sit down with their food, almost half of lunch is already over. Because of this, students often feel rushed. A longer lunch period could help solve this problem.
First, students should not feel pressured to rush through their meals. Lunch should be a time to relax and enjoy food with classmates. Some students have to walk across campus before even getting in line for food. A longer lunch break would allow students to eat at a normal pace and make better use of their time. When students are not rushed, they are more likely to feel calm and ready for the rest of the day.
Second, students need enough time to find a place to sit and eat with their friends. When the cafeteria and outdoor tables are crowded, it can take several minutes to find an open seat. Lunch is one of the only times during the day when students can socialize freely. It should be a chance to talk, relax, and take a mental break from schoolwork. Giving students more time would make lunch less stressful and more enjoyable.
Finally, students also need time to use the restroom during lunch. With such a short break, it can be difficult to eat, use the restroom, and still spend time with friends. These small moments to reset and socialize help students feel comfortable and prepared for their afternoon classes.
Overall, having a longer lunch period could positively impact students’ performance in the classroom. When students have enough time to eat, relax, and recharge, they are more likely to return to class feeling refreshed and focused. A longer lunch could lead to calmer, happier, and more productive students.
