Teachers design their desks in certain ways to support their lesson objectives. Many teachers use desk arrangements to support students’ learning, such as encouraging socializing so students can become less shy and feel more comfortable talking to others.
Most teachers use group seating, depending on their lesson plans. Students may be seated in groups for projects, or in pairs for partner work.
Many teachers, such as Mr. Harrigan, have small groups with about four people per group. He says, “I believe students learn best within small groups. I find that groups of four students work best for the amount of space we have in the classroom.”
Teachers also have different setups. For example, Mr. Smith has two desks together because he is a math teacher, and partner work is very common. Students can talk through math problems with one another, giving them one-on-one conversations that make learning easier.
Other teachers prefer rows. Rows provide more space and can make certain teaching styles easier. Mr. Noonan uses rows in his media classes because his work style and teaching style fit better with that arrangement. Many students also feel more comfortable sitting in rows.
Not all teachers design their desks the same way. It depends on their teaching style and what helps their students learn best. Some teachers want students to work in groups, while others prefer partners. Teachers may also assign seats based on students’ learning needs.
For example, a teacher may seat a student who struggles in a subject next to someone who is strong in that area, allowing them to get help more easily.
Students often enjoy being in smaller groups, like groups of four, where they can talk, socialize, and sometimes sit near their friends. Teachers find that when students work with peers, they often become more comfortable and open up more.
Mr. Harrigan has been using student groups for about 12 years. Group work has been successful in his classroom, helping students socialize more while learning. Teachers have many ways to design their desks, and it all depends on their teaching style and the needs of their students. Some teachers choose partners, some choose groups, and others want an arrangement that keeps students focused without distractions.
