Many students have concerns about the current bathroom pass policy. At our school, bathroom passes are limited to four minutes, and this rule can cause problems during the school day. Four minutes is often not enough time for students to walk to the bathroom, use it, wash their hands, and return to class.
Longer bathroom passes could help students feel more comfortable and focused in class. When students need to use the restroom but worry about running out of time, it can be distracting. Instead of paying attention to the lesson, they may focus on the clock. Some students also need extra time because the bathrooms are located far from certain classrooms. When students are given enough time, they can return to class calm and ready to learn.
Seventh grader Melanie Barcenas shared her opinion on the four-minute passes: “There is not a lot of time because most of the time there are a lot of people.” She also said, “I’m worried my time is going to run out.”
On the other hand, some people believe short bathroom passes prevent students from wasting time or wandering around the school. Strict rules can help maintain order and ensure students stay in class. This is a valid point, as schools need structure to run smoothly.
However, most students simply want to use the restroom and return to class. Allowing a few extra minutes would still discourage misuse while showing trust in students. It would also encourage responsibility and maturity.
Overall, four-minute bathroom passes are too short for many students during the school day. Extending the time limit would help students stay healthy, focused, and ready to learn while still maintaining fair and reasonable school rules.
