Most students feel the need to always stand out so they can either get attention or feel heard. This pressure can also make students feel stressed and overwhelmed. Imagine trying to be amazing at everything all the time, it’s exhausting. Many students feel like they’re never doing enough, even when they’re working really hard. This can lead to burnout, anxiety, and feeling unhappy with themselves.
Another issue is that when everyone is trying to stand out in the same ways, people actually start to look the same. Lots of students join the same types of clubs, start similar projects, or follow the same paths just to seem impressive. Instead of being unique, they end up copying what they think success is supposed to look like.
The pressure to stand out can also lead to burnout. I asked Emery How can the need to stand out lead to burnout in students? And she said “standing out makes students tired and most of their focus is only on trying to fit in.” Middle school is already a time when students are figuring out who they are, dealing with new responsibilities, and growing emotionally. Adding the expectation to be exceptional on top of that can be too much. Students may feel tired, stressed, or even lose interest in school altogether.
It also changes how students see themselves. Instead of figuring out who they are naturally, they may feel like they have to “build” a perfect version of themselves for others to see. This can make it harder to be honest and enjoy the things they truly like.
Wanting to do well and try new things is a good thing. But there’s a difference between growing as a person and trying to look impressive all the time. Students should be allowed to make mistakes, change their minds, and just be themselves without feeling like they always have to stand out.
In the end, being kind, curious, and hardworking matters more than being the most unique person in the room. Students don’t need to be extraordinary all the time, they just need the chance to learn and grow at their own pace.
