At Glen Edwards Middle School, a recent change has affected 8th grade students during lunch. The school library is now closed to 8th graders during their lunch period, even though it remains open for 6th and 7th graders.
According to the school, the change is due to the librarian’s lunch period now taking place during the 8th grade lunch. In the past, the library was open to all grades, giving students a place to read, study, or spend time in a quieter environment.
Many 8th graders say they used the library regularly, especially since they often have more homework and responsibilities. The library also provided a calm alternative to the cafeteria, which can be loud and crowded during lunch.
Now, 8th graders no longer have access to that space. Some students say this has made lunchtime more stressful, as they no longer have the option to go somewhere quiet.
One student shared their thoughts on the change, saying, “It’s a little sad because I liked to hang out in there during lunch with my friends.”
The school has not announced any plans to adjust the schedule, but some students are wondering if there could be other solutions. Suggestions include changing the librarian’s lunch period or finding a way to keep the library open for all grades.
For now, the schedule remains the same, and 8th graders will continue to have limited access to the library during their lunch period.
