The life of a student athlete during one day is full of activities from beginning to end. An early wake-up is a must for practice, then they are in school all day, and after classes they go to another training session. After coming back home, it is still necessary to do homework. Such a schedule could wear out anyone, but student athletes develop the skill of being organized and tough it out because it is important to them to excel in school as well as in their sport. Let’s get to know some student athletes here at GEMS.
Deegan Johnston
Deegan is a student athlete here at GEMS who is able to keep up his grades in the classroom while also practicing the sport he plays—baseball. Here is how Deegan manages his daily life. How do you start your morning as a student athlete? “I always start my morning by taking a shower and then eating a good, healthy breakfast that my mom makes. It consists of eggs, bacon, and some fruit. Then, after breakfast, I brush my teeth to stay clean,” says Deegan.
As a student athlete, they also have to make time to juggle schoolwork and sport practice. “I manage my time with school and sports by getting all of my work done in class before going home, so I can have some time to relax before I have to go to baseball practice,” explained Deegan. Many student athletes are able to manage their time at school if they know they will be busy for the rest of the day.
Lastly, many student athletes experience negative parts about being a student athlete, especially the challenges that come with it. One of the most challenging parts is physical fatigue and limited free time. “When I am tired from a long weekend of baseball, I get really tired, and it is hard not to fall asleep in class and still be able to study the day’s work,” explained Deegan. Most athletes struggle with being tired, staying awake in class, and keeping up with their studies.
Cameron Kraushar
Cameron Kraushar is also a student athlete at GEMS who stays focused in the classroom while practicing baseball. Let’s ask Cameron some questions about being a student athlete. How do you prepare for games? He replied, “I prepare for a game by listening to music.”
Next, many athletes have a favorite part of being on a sports team. “My favorite part about being on a sports team is getting better with your friends,” says Cameron. Finally, many student athletes find that sports help them in school and in their personal lives. Cameron says, “Being a student athlete helps me in school because baseball teaches kids how to be good people.” Some student athletes use lessons from their sports teams to guide how they behave in their daily lives.
Overall, student athletes show how accomplishment in studies can be mixed with the fun of sports. They work hard, stay organized, and above all, they don’t give up even when faced with challenges. Their effort is a constant reminder that doing our best and not quitting is what truly matters.
