Mr. Colson’s method of coaching young athletes in flag football and volleyball is very much appreciated and it works too. Teaching skills is just one part of his job; the main aspect of his coaching is motivating the players and assisting team victory. No matter if it is the field or court, Mr. Colson puts skill development, safety, teamwork, and, of course, winning first.
Mr. Colson is a flag football coach who gives instruction in the essential skills such as throwing, catching, flag-pulling, and defense. “The importance of timing cannot be overstated, as the players must move in harmony at the precise instant,” said Mr. Colson. In volleyball, passing, serving, setting, hitting, and blocking are the main skills taught. The players are also instructed in quick transitions between offense and defense and court positioning. Learning these fundamentals is imperative for both individual and team triumph.
Skill development alone is however not enough. Mr. Colson ensures that all players are progressing, either through individual training or via group exercises. This constant advancement keeps the players so engaged that they cannot help wanting more.
In both sports, safety is the first concern. Mr. Colson does not allow the players to block in flag football; thus, he teaches them the importance of contact-avoidance in injury prevention. In volleyball, the players are constantly in motion so it is critical that everyone knows the others’ locations to prevent crashes. The court’s communication serves the players by keeping them safe and making their playing together smoother.
More than anything else, Mr. Colson asserts that teamwork is the factor which decides the game in favor. He points out to the players that the win is not a matter of one person but the whole unit that acts in unison. Collaboration, trust, and support, both on and off the playing area, lead to the victory.
